What is a Trundle Bed?
Trundle beds have been gaining popularity in recent years, but there is still some confusion surrounding what exactly they are and how they work.

The terminology can be confusing so we are going to do our best to explain what the different options are with all the information you need to know to make an informed purchase. Not the most exciting read in the world but it should help you decided what trundle you need for your child’s bedroom! No yawning now…
So what is a trundle bed?
A trundle bed is a type of bed that consists of two separate beds, with one bed tucked underneath the other. The lower bed, known as the trundle, is on wheels or casters and can be rolled out from underneath the main bed when needed. It can be smaller in size and lower in height compared to the main bed and so may need a specific trundle mattress size.
How does a trundle bed work?
The trundle bed is designed to provide an additional sleeping space without taking up any extra floor space in a room. When not in use, the trundle bed can be conveniently stored underneath the main bed, making it an ideal solution for small bedrooms or guest rooms.
When the need for an extra bed arises, the trundle bed can be easily rolled out from underneath the main bed. Some trundle beds come with a mechanism that allows the trundle to be raised to the same height as the main bed, creating a larger sleeping surface. Once the trundle bed is no longer needed, it can be rolled back under the main bed, saving space and maintaining a tidy appearance.
What are the types of trundle beds?
– Classic Trundle
The classic trundle bed is a simple, space-efficient solution. It consists of a bed frame with a built-in drawer that slides out from underneath. These trundles are perfect for accommodating sleepovers or providing an extra bed when needed.
Mathy by Bols offer such a design as do Lifetime Kids Room.
– Pop Up Trundles
For those looking for an adjustable option, pop-up trundles are an excellent choice. These beds feature a mechanism that allows the trundle to be raised to the height of the main bed, creating a seamless and larger sleeping surface. So provided both the main and the trundle mattress are the same height you can then sit them side by side to create a large double bed.
Lifetime, Flexa and Nidi all provide excellent pop up trundles with Nidi providing ones that have an automated gas mechanism.
– Trundle Drawers
If storage is a top priority, then opt for a trundle with built-in drawers. These drawers can be used to store toys, clothes, or other essentials, making them an ideal choice for keeping the room organized and clutter-free. They usually have a solid base so are not able to store mattress as they are not designed to take the weight of a person. They are used solely for storage. Oliver offers this with their single bed design.
– Daybed Trundles
Daybeds are a stylish and multifunctional choice for kids’ rooms. When paired with a trundle, they transform into a comfortable sleeping space for guests. During the day, the daybed can serve as a cozy seating area to sit and read.
– Bunk Bed Trundles
Maximize vertical space with bunk beds that come equipped with trundles. This setup is perfect for siblings sharing a room or for accommodating friends during sleepovers. The trundle can be an additional bed or storage, depending on your needs. Both Lifetime Kids and Muba Design offer these options on most of their bunk beds.
